Theatre History Studies accepts submissions on the full range of topics in theatre history on a rolling deadline. Please submit articles for consideration as soon as they are ready for review.

 The 2019 issue will also feature a special section co-edited by Penelope Cole and Rand Harmon on “The Site-Based Theatre Audience Experience: Dramaturgy and Ethics”

Operating outside of the traditional theatrical space, with its normalized conventions of behavior for both performer and spectator, site-based performance blurs the boundaries between or re-defines the social conventions of the viewer/performer/site relationship. An emphasis on visceral experience embedded into site-based work often assumes a certain type of mobile or agile spectator, or may create compulsory participation with not only the site, but the performers or performance itself. This special section seeks case studies that explore the unique dramaturgies of site-based performances, or engage the ethical implications of disruptive audience conventions.  The co-editors welcome submissions analyzing spectator embodiment and engagement, or exploring aesthetic innovations or ethical challenges experienced by audiences in site-based productions.

Theatre History Studies is the official journal of the Mid-America Theatre Conference and is published by the University of Alabama Press. Since its premiere issue in 1981, Theatre History Studies has published essays on a wide range of subjects within the field of theatre history, embracing multiple perspectives and methodologies. The journal is devoted to presenting high quality scholarship in theatre studies and theatre history in order to promote understanding and discovery of world theatre and performance.

Please send manuscripts prepared in conformity with the guidelines in the Chicago Manual of Style and the University of Alabama Press style sheet located on the MATC website (http://matc.us). Illustrations are encouraged. Essays should be between 6,000-10,000 words and use endnotes rather than footnotes. Consulting editors will review the manuscripts, a process that takes approximately three months. The journal does not normally accept studies in dramatic literature unless there is a focus on actual production and performance.

Electronic submissions are preferred and are accepted in Microsoft Word. Please do not submit a pdf. Hard copies should be submitted in duplicate.
