Theatre History Studies
Volume 37, 2018
General Section and Special Section on Politics, Theatre, and Change
Call for Papers
Theatre History Studies accepts submissions on the full range of topics in theatre history on a rolling deadline. Please submit articles for consideration as soon as they are ready for review.
The 2018 issue will also feature a special section co-edited by Sara Freeman and Brian Cook on “Rousing Experiences: Politics, Theatre, and Change.”
To rouse is, by definition, “to startle out of inactivity; to cause or give rise to (an emotion or feeling).” The co-editors of this special section welcome submissions on plays, productions, processes, and/or people which have been rousing: specifically where theatre and politics have intersected to embolden, comfort, or incite artists or audiences, or which have piqued curiosity, exasperation, or anger. Definitional debates about political theatre are less of concern than historical analysis of places and performances where change is visible in and through theatre.
Publication in September 2018.

Illustrations are encouraged. Essays should be between 6,000-10,000 words and use endnotes rather than footnotes. Consulting editors will review the manuscripts, a process that takes approximately three months. The journal does not normally accept studies in dramatic literature unless there is a focus on actual production and performance.
Electronic submissions are preferred and are accepted in Microsoft Word. Please do not submit a pdf. Hard copies should be submitted in duplicate.
